Simon Below

Simon Below (* 1995 in Xanten ) is a German jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Live and act

Below, who was initially enthusiastic about playing the drums, began taking piano lessons as a child. At the age of twelve he discovered jazz for himself, imparted by his piano teacher Tae-Sung Chung at the cathedral music school in Xanten. In 2014 he began studying at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Hendrik Soll and Hubert Nuss . Together with fellow students, he founded his quartet in 2016, whose debut album was released in 2018. He also played with Fabian Arends , Reza Askari , Marko Mebus, Johanna Klein, Jonas Burgwinkel , Matthias Bergmann and Ferdinand Schwarz.

Below won first prize in the state competition Jugend jazzt in 2009, 2012 and 2014 . In 2017 he received the Steinway-Förderpreis NRW and was a finalist in the Young German Jazz Prize with his quartet . In 2017 he also received the "Werner Richard - Dr. Carl Dörken" scholarship. In 2018 his quartet also won the Avignon Jazz Prize (CD production in the "La Buisonne" studio). Bellow has been working for Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now together with trombonist Clemens Gottwald since 2018 .
