Simon Henzler (born December 1, 1976 in Ravensburg ) is a former German football player in the position of goalkeeper. He gained notoriety primarily through his involvement in the World Cup winners' match between FC St. Pauli and FC Bayern Munich in the second half of the 2001/02 season.

Career

Simon Henzler started playing soccer in the youth departments of SV Weingarten , SSV Ulm 1846 and VfB Stuttgart and ended up with the Austrian first division club FC Tirol Innsbruck , where he was a substitute for Russian national goalkeeper Stanislaw Tschertschessow . At the beginning of 1998 he was poached by the second division club SV Meppen to Emsland, but remained behind Stefan Brasas when the club was relegated to the second division. Henzler spent the next two years with Meppen in the Regionalliga Nord without getting beyond the reserve role. When Meppen did not manage to qualify for the new double-track regional league and had to relegate to the major league in the 1999/2000 season, Henzler switched to the second division FC St. Pauli as a substitute for Carsten Wehlmann . In his first season at St. Pauli, Henzler found himself behind Heinz Weber on the bench, but in April 2001 he made his first two appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga and celebrated the surprising promotion to the Bundesliga with St. Pauli .

After Weber left for the 2001/02 season, Henzler was initially preferred to newcomer Tihomir Bulat . In the game of the 17th matchday against 1. FC Nürnberg (final score 0-0) he got his chance from coach Dietmar Demuth and used it. By the end of the season, he had completed 17 first division games for Hamburg, but could not prevent direct relegation. Among other things, he stood between the posts in the memorable game against the newly crowned World Cup winner Bayern Munich on February 6, 2002, which the St. Paulians sensationally won 2-1.

At the beginning of the second division season 2002/03 Henzler was a regular goalkeeper, but before the 7th matchday after a series of mistakes and 23 goals conceded in six games by coach Joachim Philipkowski for some games from the squad and replaced by Bulat. He did not return to the regular formation and was exchanged for the Bielefeld goalkeeper Heinz Müller during the winter break . He only spent the second half of the season at the first division club Arminia Bielefeld and remained behind Mathias Hain without a competitive game.

In 2003/04 he moved to 1. FC Union Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga on a free transfer . There he was in a duel for the regular place in the gate with Robert Wulnikowski . Wulnikowski prevailed and although Henzler was named "Man of the Day" in the kicker sports magazine for his performance in his Union debut on matchday 9 against Eintracht Trier , it was only enough for one more appearance. At the end of the season Union Berlin was relegated to the regional league and Henzler moved again, this time to regional league Holstein Kiel. At Kiel he was mostly in the regular formation in the Regionalliga Nord and completed 58 regional league appearances for the storks in three seasons. He was also Holstein's regular goalkeeper in the 2006/07 season , after returning to the Regionalliga Nord he lost his regular place to Michael Frech . In the third division season 2009/10 he remained number 2, but got his playing times again and again due to injuries and coach changes. Even after relegation to the Regionalliga Nord, he continued to be a member of the Holstein Kiel squad and also trained the goalkeepers of the youth training center. In May 2014, Henzler signed a two-year contract as a goalkeeping coach with the newly promoted Bundesliga club SC Paderborn 07 .

From the 2015/16 season, Henzler has been training the goalkeepers of Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 .
