Robert Wulnikowski (born July 11, 1977 in Bydgoszcz , Poland ) is a former German-Polish soccer player and current soccer coach . The goalkeeper has been under contract with the Würzburger Kickers as a goalkeeping coach since summer 2017 .

Player career

Wulnikowski began playing football in his hometown near Zawisza Bydgoszcz . In 1990 he came to the youth department of FC Schalke 04 and in 1997 moved up to the club's second team, with which he played in the Oberliga Westfalen . In 1999 he switched to the regional division 1. FC Union Berlin , where Wulnikowski was initially a substitute goalkeeper behind Kay Wehner (1999/2000 season) and Sven Beuckert (2000 to 2002). In 2001 he rose with the club in the 2nd Bundesliga, but without having played a league game. In the 2000/01 DFB Cup , Union Berlin made it into the final (0: 2 against FC Schalke 04). Wulnikowski came in for the quarterfinal win against Bundesliga club VfL Bochum (1-0) after 30 minutes for the injured Beuckert. Only after the dismissal of long-time coach Georgi Wassilew in October 2002 and the engagement of coach Mirko Votava was Wulnikowski able to prevail against Beuckert and became a regular goalkeeper. By the end of the 2003/04 season, after which the club had to relegate again as the table penultimate, Wulnikowski completed a total of 54 second division games for the club.

After Union Berlin was relegated to the second division, Wulnikowski moved to the second division promoted Rot-Weiss Essen for an unknown transfer fee . There he was in the starting line-up at the beginning of the season, but already made a mistake on the 1st matchday and was replaced on the 3rd matchday by coach Jürgen Gelsdorf by René Renno because, according to Gelsdorf, he “does not exude the calm and serenity that he and his front men need have " . Until the end of the season Wulnikowski was no longer used and after relegation to the regional league, his contract was dissolved.

Wulnikowski then joined VfR Aalen in the Regionalliga Süd in 2005 . He completed two seasons as a regular goalkeeper at the club and was sixth in the final table twice. In April 2007 Wulnikowski announced his move to league competitor Sportfreunde Siegen . There he was in the squad as a regular goalkeeper in the 2007/08 season.

Before the 2008/09 season he moved to the third division Kickers Offenbach . There he extended his contract for another three years during the winter break of 2009/10.

In 2010/11, Wulnikowski saved two penalties in the second round of the DFB Cup in the penalty shoot-out against Borussia Dortmund ; Offenbach moved into the 3rd round.

On November 6, 2012, it was announced that his contract with Kickers Offenbach, which expired at the end of the season, was extended for another year to June 30, 2014. According to other sources, he even extended it to 2015. The contract guaranteed him monthly payments of 17,000 euros basic salary plus bonuses. However, Wulnikowski is currently in a labor court dispute with Kickers Offenbach, which claims through the insolvency administrator that the contract expired with Offenbach's forced relegation.

After a short interlude with the 2nd team from RB Leipzig , Wulnikowski moved to the ambitious regional division Würzburger Kickers with coach Bernd Hollerbach in summer 2014 . After two consecutive promotions, in which Wulnikowski was the first goalkeeper, the Würzburg team have been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga since the 2016/17 season . Wulnikowski also kept his regular place there, although Jörg Siebenhandl was signed as a new goalkeeper. In February 2017, Wulnikowski extended his contract, which was running out at the end of the season, for another year until June 2018, but shortly afterwards suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in March and was out for an indefinite period. In June 2017 he announced the end of his active career.
