This was followed by a move to FC Sliven , a club in the Bulgarian first division, the A Grupa , where he was only employed for a short time. In 1968/1969 he moved to Marek Dupniza . Then he ended up with Etar Veliko Tarnowo , a top Bulgarian club, for which he played from 1969 to 1977. During this time he completed 220 games for the club and contributed 32 goals. During his time as a professional soccer player, he played 4 international matches for the Bulgarian national soccer team .

Stations as a trainer

After he was trained as a football teacher in Cologne , he became a coach at the Bulgarian club Levski Straschiza . He looked after the team from 1977 to 1979. Then he got a job offer from his last club as an active field player, in which he played for eight years, Etar Veliko Tarnowo , first as an assistant coach (1979 to 1981), then - with interruptions - to 1992 as head coach. 1984/1985 he was the coach of Spartak Pleven , from 1985 to 1986 he was assistant coach of the Bulgarian national team - also during the soccer world championship in 1986  - and in 1987 their head coach.

After his engagement in Veliko Tarnowo ended in 1992, he first looked after Levski Sofia (1993 to 1995), later Anorthosis Famagusta from Cyprus and ZSKA Sofia (1996 to 1998), before he went to Germany and his most successful time as a coach at 1. FC Union Berlin experienced. In the 2000/2001 season he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with the capitals , reached the DFB Cup final in the same season and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup , where FC Haka from Finland was eliminated in the first round could and only eliminated in the second round against the Bulgarian representative Litex Lovech . In the 2nd Bundesliga it went very well in the first season, the climber surprisingly reached 6th place in the end.

After Wassilew announced that he would be leaving the club after the season, a disgraceful appearance and a 7-0 defeat at 1.FC Köln on October 7, 2002, Vasilev was on holiday in Cyprus shortly after the game . Dismissed October.

In spring 2003 he went to Nea Salamis Famagusta . The employment relationship did not last long, however, because in the same year he left the club again in the direction of Levski Sofia (2003 to 2004), where he had been employed as a coach ten years earlier.

On December 13, 2006, Vasilev returned completely surprisingly to his "old love" 1. FC Union Berlin in order to lead the club , which had meanwhile slipped into the upper league , back into the 2. Bundesliga. However, his second term in office was not a very good star; the coach, not necessarily used to fourth division level, was surprised at the quality deficiencies in the squad at the time and the unexpectedly low level of play in the top division. Furthermore, he was accused of a lack of work ethic by the board of directors and so they separated again after only three months on April 6, 2007 and instead the club signed Christian Schreier from competitor MSV Neuruppin with immediate effect .

After that it was quiet about Vasilev. After the dismissal, he works for FK Neftochimik in the Second Bulgarian League and in June 2007 he moved to the Greek club APO Levadiakos . There he announced his resignation on March 5, 2008 and testified that the club had only "little potential". In the 2009/2010 season he led the Bulgarian second division club PFK Nessebar .

Between March and June 2011, Vasilev was the coach of the Bulgarian first division club FC Chernomorez Burgas . Dimitar Dimitrov took over his post in Burgas .
