Simon Pauli , called the Elder (born October 28, 1534 in Schwerin , † July 17, 1591 in Rostock ) was a German Lutheran theologian and first city superintendent of Rostock.

Life

Pauli, son of the Schwerin mayor Johann Pauli, enrolled in 1552 to study theology at the University of Rostock and in 1555 moved to Wittenberg , where he studied with Philipp Melanchthon . In 1559 he was appointed cathedral preacher in Schwerin and a year later he was appointed pastor at the Jakobikirche in Rostock and professor of theology at the university. Together with David Chyträus and Johann Kittel, he received his doctorate in theology in 1561. Pauli was rector of the University of Rostock four times (1566, 1570, 1582, 1588).

In addition to his teaching duties, he accepted the appointment as assessor of the princely consistory in 1570 and as princely superintendent of the Rostock district in 1571 - each against the protest of the Rostock council, which saw his rights reduced in the princely appointment. After the settlement between the Mecklenburg dukes and the city of Rostock in the Rostock inheritance contract of September 21, 1573, he was appointed the first city superintendent in Rostock by the clerical ministry and council of the city of Rostock and, after ducal confirmation, he was appointed to his office in 1574.

Pauli was married twice, first to Regina Schmidt (1543–1563), then to Katharina Prenger; the second marriage was his son Heinrich Pauli (1565-1610), his grandson was Simon Pauli (the younger) (1603-1680). The marriage of his daughter Elisabeth († 1635) with the Rostock deacon Johann Corfinius had another grandson, who later became the chief pastor of St. Catherine's Church in Hamburg, Johannes Corfinius .
