Simon Weber (born January 1, 1866 in Bohlingen ; † March 12, 1929 in Freiburg ) was a German Catholic theologian and professor of New Testament literature and exegesis at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

biography

After studying theology at the University of Freiburg and in the Saint Peter seminary and being ordained a priest, Simon Weber came to Offenburg as vicar in 1891 . To continue and deepen his theological studies, Simon Weber was sent to Rome in 1892, where he worked as a chaplain at the German national church Santa Maria dell'Anima . In addition to theology, he acquired a thorough knowledge of oriental studies during his years in Rome. The fruit of these intensive studies were numerous works on the history and theology of the Armenian Church , including the translation of the Armenian traditional Epideixis of Irenaeus of Lyon and a selection of texts by Armenian theologians for the Library of the Church Fathers series .

In Rome, Simon Weber received his doctorate in theology in 1894 at the Collegium Divi Thomae Aquinatis .

After his return from Rome, Simon Weber became vicar in Wollmatingen near Konstanz . Although the New Testament exegesis was at the center of his previous studies and interests, he completed his habilitation in theological apologetics at the University of Freiburg in 1896 and was appointed associate professor for this subject in 1898. Even when he took over the chair for New Testament literature and exegesis at the University of Freiburg in 1908, apologetics remained a center of his academic work. When he was appointed to the Freiburg Cathedral Chapter in 1916, he gave up his chair at the Freiburg Theological Faculty.
