Asia Pulp and Paper Company Ltd. (APP)

Asia Pulp and Paper Company Ltd. mt based in Singapore is the world's fourth largest producer of pulp and paper. APP was founded in 1994 and manufactures paper and pulp in Indonesia, China and India. APP also has packaging material factories in these countries and in Singapore, the United States, and Mexico . APP has marketing offices on all continents. APP was considered a "small Indonesian miracle", as the company hardly suffered any damage even in the economically difficult times for Indonesia in 1997/98. Meanwhile, however, the economic strength of the company is attributed to the cheap exploitation of rainforests. For example, Indonesia's largest pulp and paper mill, Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk. (IKPP) in Riau, Sumatra, which owns around 58% of the APP, draws around 70% of the trees it needs from rainforest stocks. As a result, at least 300,000 hectares of rainforest have been destroyed in recent years. This fact led, among other things, to APP being exposed to a boycott call in Great Britain . The company set itself the goal of using only wood from plantations; however, the implementation is difficult because the land required for this is also claimed by the local population. For this reason, in February 2001 there were clashes between members of the Saday people and security personnel from a timber company.

1995 APP was listed on the New York Stock Exchange ; however, trading ceased on April 4, 2001. The company today has total debt of $ 13.4 billion, making it the most heavily indebted company in Asia. The main reason for this was the lending by foreign banks, which, due to the enormous growth of APP, showed a lack of care. At the time, IKPP's financiers included Deutsche Bank , Commerzbank , Dresdner Bank , Berliner Handels- und Frankfurter Bank , Bank Austria , Bankers Trust , IKB Deutsche Industriebank , Landesbank Schleswig-Holstein and Norddeutsche Landesbank . The Hermes Credit Insurance also granted several export credit guarantees. At that time, shares were bought by Deutsche Bank Asset Management , Postbank , DWS Investments and Zurich Scudder Investments .

criticism

The Worldwatch Institute accused APP of buying the goodwill of decision-makers in politics with the donations. In China, for example, proceedings have been initiated for illegal logging. In 2006 the company invited Hengyuan Li, the vice president of the state environmental organization All-China Environmental Federation (ACEF), to tour its production facilities. A few months later, APP was recognized by ACEF for its environmental protection efforts, with the Suzhou branch cited as a prime example of an integrated pulp and paper mill in China.

In 2005, however, the ACEF supported the decision to boycott the Zhejiang Hotel Association regarding APP products and even offered the association to support it in an insulting process initiated by APP. Li explained the 2006 policy change that the ACEF was initially not fully aware of APP's role in environmental degradation in China, having received most of its information from environmental groups that were critical of the company. However, after carrying out their own investigations, it was concluded that the judgment was incomplete and subjective. "This time we gave the company an award for its environmentally friendly paper products to restore its reputation," said Li.

The Sinar Mas Group is also accused of destroying the rainforest in Indonesia through the construction and operation of paper mills through its subsidiary APP. The cultivation of palm oil plantations on Sumatra is also criticized by the local population. Sinar Mas had promised the smallholders there that they would plant an area of six hectares with oil palms, with which they could cover their own needs. In fact, however, 600 hectares were cleared. Since the only oil press in the region is owned by Sinar Mas, the farmers were forced to sell their crops to the group at a low price.

After the companies Unilever and Kraft Foods , the food company Nestlé terminated its cooperation with Smart Tbk in March 2010 after Greenpeace accused it of violating international standards and Indonesian law, participating in land conflicts and clearing rainforests. After Greenpeace informed the companies Montblanc and Tchibo about large-scale rainforest clearing, they instructed their suppliers to end their cooperation with APP. The companies Adidas , Carrefour , Metro , Tesco and Mattel also turned away from the company.

The actions of Greenpeace led the company to announce that it no longer wanted to clear the rainforests of Indonesia .
