Siren was an American progressive and heavy metal band from Tampa , Florida that was formed in 1981 and disbanded in 1991.

history

The band was formed in 1981, with the singer Doug "Dead" Lee only joining the following year. In 1984 the self-financed single Metro-Mercenary was released , on which the cast consists of guitarist Rob Phillips, bassist Benjamin Parrish and drummer Ed Aborn in addition to Lee. After the release, Edward Amyx came as the new bass player, whereupon the demo Iron Coffins was recorded in January 1985 . In addition to the title track, the sound carrier contains the songs Over the Rainbow , Before the Storm and Shadow of a Future Past . Then the label Sanaty Records from Pennsylvania became aware of the band and released Over the Rainbow on the sampler Start to Stardom . The following year, the second demo followed with Dead of Night , whereupon new members are included with guitarist Edward "Faxon" Kotz and bassist Gregg Culbertson. On the 1986 album No Place Like Home , a new drummer can be heard in Brian Law. Phillips had returned to the band and can therefore be heard on the album instead of Kotz. The sound carrier was released by Flametrader Records , a sub-label of Semaphore , with around 8,000 units being sold. On the second album Financial Suicide , which was released in 1989 on Aaarrg Records , the line-up had changed almost completely with the addition of guitarist Brian C. Hendrickson, bassist Les Talent and drummer David Smith. The latter was already active in the band before the Metro-Mercenary recordings . About 6,000 to 7,000 pieces of the sound carrier were sold. In contrast to the two demos and the single, of which 8,000 copies each, this value was rather low. After the publication, Doug Lee was initially active at Mekong Delta , which is why there was hardly any time for Siren. A little later Lee moved to Germany , where he put together a new line-up consisting of bassist Johan Susant (ex- Target , ex- Holy Moses ), guitarists Georgie Symbos (ex-Holy Moses) and Fred Fricke (ex- Living Death , ex-Sacred Chao, ex- Laos ) and the drummer Frankie Ullrich. First of all, the latter position should be filled by Jörg Michael , who, however, had to decline due to health reasons. On October 26, 1990 the band performed in Werl together with Accu§er , Secrecy and Life Artist , where they played new songs such as Straight Jacket , Take It , Winds of Fire and Evil Clowns in addition to well-known songs . After another demo in 1991, which includes four songs, the band broke up. The demo contains the four aforementioned new songs and was recorded at RCP Studios . Due to the dissolution, the planned third album, and thus about 15 more, partly finished songs, remained unpublished. In 2010 the band was supposed to take part in Keep It True , but they canceled their appearance and was replaced by Steelwing .

style

According to Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard , No Place Like Home contains soulful vocals that take some getting used to. The songs are not immediately accessible to the listener, but only unfold when they are listened to several times, as is the case with bands like Watchtower or Sacred Blade . He also described the music as "hard, varied psycho-metal". In a later issue, Thomas Kupfer reviewed Financial Suicide and found that atmospheric passages like those in the songs Iron Coffins or Over the Rainbow , which are included on the first album, are now missing. Instead, straight heavy metal rules.
