Steelwing was a Swedish heavy metal band from Nyköping founded in 2009 . The group itself describes their style of music at their concerts as true heavy metal . In 2016 the band announced their breakup.

history

Steelwing was founded in the spring of 2009 under the name Scavenger , but changed the name to Steelwing after the singer Riley joined. The new name was inspired by the cover of the Judas Priest album Screaming For Vengeance , which depicts a steel bird. Shortly after recording the first four songs, the band took part in a newcomer competition organized by the Austrian booking agency Rock the Nation , in which they and the Greek group Suicidal Angels were victorious against 1200 other groups. Her debut album Lord of the Wasteland was mastered by Achim Köhler , who had already supported Brainstorm , Primal Fear and many more. Steelwing's style is often assigned to NWOTHM (New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal), alluding to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal . The band sees their influences and role models in groups such as Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Diamond Head , Accept and Savatage .

The first studio album, Lord of the Wasteland , was recorded at Deep Blue Studio near their hometown and released on February 26, 2010 via NoiseArt Records . It received a positive response in the press.

"The British early eighties sound is really on the rise again and anyone who is not sufficiently served with the recently released WHITE WIZZARD disc will now get the appropriate second thanks to STEELWING."

- Thomas Meyns : CD review

“But I'm sure that with STEELWING a band is growing up here that can still achieve a lot in the areas of traditional metal. The first impression the Swedes leave with 'Lord Of The Wasteland' is certainly not bad. Old school fans should also give the troupe an ear now. "

- Steve : CD review

The cover of the album was drawn by Ed Repka and shows an automobile equipped with automatic weapons being steered by a robot that looks like a skeleton through a road in a wasteland, as well as a steel bird.

At the beginning of 2011, bassist Gustav Skürk left the band and was replaced by Nic Savage.

In January 2012 the band released their second studio album, entitled Zone of Alienation .

Concert history

Steelwing appeared in their first concerts mainly as a cover band , as the band had only two songs of their own with their demo. Until spring 2010 she went on a club tour with the groups Enforcer , Cauldron and Suicidal Angels , until the end of 2010 the group went on tour with Blind Guardian as well as Sabaton and Alestorm ., Where the band received mostly positive reviews.

“STEELWING, a barely one year old power metal band from metallic Sweden, made the first igniter at 7.30 and proved that they are definitely not beginners. Dressed classically in studded (sic) leather, they fought against the Berlin October rain blues with an (estimated) 170 BPM and fast riffs - which was quite successful, at least in the front rows the energy spread to the audience. "

- Wolfgang : concert report Berlin, October 20, 2010

In January and February 2011 the band played as the opening act for the heavy metal band Accept on their tour " Blood of the Nations ".

In January 2012, the band went on tour with Grand Magus , Bullet , Vanderbuyst and Skull Fist , with Steelwing only headlining some dates with Skull Fist as special guests. Various local bands played as opening act during their headline concerts.
