history
Camp Polk was established in 1865 as a military outpost in response to the Indian Wars with the Paiute . The name came from Polk County (Oregon) , the home county of the commandant of the camp. The camp consisted of a few huts west of Squaw Creek, about 3 miles northeast of present-day town. Around 1870, Samuel Hindeman settled in the area, which also ran a post office. In 1888 the post office was moved from Camp Polk to its current location and the name was changed to Sisters, based on the nearby Three Sisters .
