Sisters High School

Sisters is a city in Deschutes County in the US state of Oregon and is part of the Bend (Oregon) Metropolitan Statistical Area . The population was 959 in the 2000 census , but increased to 2038 in the 2010 US census and has more than doubled.

history

Camp Polk was established in 1865 as a military outpost in response to the Indian Wars with the Paiute . The name came from Polk County (Oregon) , the home county of the commandant of the camp. The camp consisted of a few huts west of Squaw Creek, about 3 miles northeast of present-day town. Around 1870, Samuel Hindeman settled in the area, which also ran a post office. In 1888 the post office was moved from Camp Polk to its current location and the name was changed to Sisters, based on the nearby Three Sisters .

The National Park Service lists three structures and sites for Sisters on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 11, 2019), including Sisters High School .

Whychus Creek runs through the southern half of the urban area . To the west of the Sisters rises the mountain range of the Three Sisters.

The racial population was 95.83% white, 1.56% Native American, 0.42% Asian; 0.83% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.59% of the population.
