Six-String Samurai is an American action film from 1998.

action

The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that was transformed into an uninhabitable desert landscape by Russian atom bombs in 1957. Since the governments have collapsed, Elvis rules the region of "Lost Vegas" , which has been unsuccessfully besieged by the Red Army , which has now shrunk to the size of 40 men, since the 1950s .

The film opens with the death of Elvis, whereupon a radio host calls on all musicians in the country to go to Lost Vegas to prove their skills and become the new king of rock 'n' roll .

Buddy, a guitarist similar to Buddy Holly with a katana on the back of his semi-acoustic guitar , also follows this call and travels through the deserts of California with a child who follows him every step of the way. On their journey they encounter numerous adversaries, such as B. a cannibal suburban family, zombie-like beings in space suits from NASA , the Red Army, a bowling team consisting of bounty hunters, a Russian rockabilly band (the "Red Elvises") and the normal inhabitants of the devastated no man's land. The main antagonist is Death , a slash- like guitarist with a veiled face, black top hat and a Stratocaster , who with his three minions also goes to Lost Vegas to be the new king of eradicating rock'n'roll and ushering in the reign of metal .

publication

When the film was released in 1998, reviews were mixed, but mostly positive, with indie magazine critics particularly praising the film for its originality. Conventional critics were more cautious: 58% of the critics on the Rotten Tomatoes site gave it a good rating, and on the Internet Movie Database the film received a rating of 6.5 out of 10 points (as of January 2012).

The film was only shown in a few cinemas and grossed only around 125,000 dollars, making the film a flop with the already very low budget of 2,000,000 dollars . Originally there were plans to publish a trilogy, but this was not realized after the poor box office results.

The film was released on DVD in Germany on February 21, 2006 .
