Summer 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. Influential families from National Socialist Germany sent their daughters to Augusta-Victoria College in the English coastal town of Bexhill-on-Sea so that they could learn the language there. The class at the girls' boarding school run by Miss Rocholl is taught by the teacher Ilse Keller. Thomas Miller, a Nazi opponent, is their English teacher. When a teacher's body is found at the school, the police suspect Miller of murder.

After Set Fire to the Stars and A Kind of Murder, it is the third feature film directed by Andy Goddard , who in the past has mostly worked for television series. Goddard also wrote the script with Celyn Jones and actor Eddie Izzard .

Judi Dench took on the role of the headmistress Miss Rocholl, Carla Juri plays Ilse Keller, her assistant and teacher of the German girls. Izzard plays the English teacher Thomas Miller. The German actress Bianca Nawrath plays Paula.

Filming took place in various locations in Wales in the summer of 2018. Chris Seager acted as cameraman .

The film is due to hit theaters in the UK on September 25, 2020.
