Skanör med Falsterbo is a town in the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historic province of Skåne .
The place in the municipality of Vellinge was created through the merging of the two previously independent towns Skanör and Falsterbo - with Skanör as the more populous suburb.
geography
Skänör-Falsterbo is located in the elongated, reef-like western part of the southern Swedish peninsula Falsterbo between Öresund and the Baltic Sea with Falsterbo in the south and Skanör in the north.
history
Skanör and Falsterbo are among the oldest cities in Sweden. Between the 12th and 16th centuries, one of the most important trade markets in Northern Europe, the so-called Skånemarknaden (" Schonenmarkt "), was held annually from the end of July to October, sometimes extending into November, on the beach between the two cities . It received its importance from the rich herring deposits in the north of the peninsula. The taxes obtained from the market operation were the main source of income for the Danish King Waldemar IV. Atterdag, among others .
When the herring stocks declined in the 16th century, the market lost its importance and was no longer continued, which also reduced the importance of the two cities. Falsterbo and Skanör were henceforth small fishing villages with city rights .
In 1754 the two independent towns Skanör and Falsterbo were merged, and the town of Skanör-Falsterbo was created.
In 1904 the Malmö - Vellinge railway line with two stops Skanör and Falsterbo was built. New residential areas grew along the railroad. The railroad was finally shut down in 1971 and completely dismantled the following year.
During the First World War , a branch line was laid to today's small boat harbor in Skanör, where a cement factory was built at the time. Apparently it was actually a warehouse of war materials in the event that Sweden should be involved in the war. According to other reports, the factory was built under the influence of German interests. The huge foundation, which is the only evidence of the old system today, should therefore have been the location of a larger cannon that, together with its counterpart in Køge, Denmark, was supposed to guard the strait.
Worth seeing
- The churches of Skanör and Falsterbo date from the 13th and 14th centuries.
- Falsterbo organizes an annual show jumping and dressage tournament , the Falsterbo Horse Show (evaluation test of the Nations Cup for show jumpers and the World Dressage Masters ).
- Skanör has a small fishing port and yacht harbor, which is now mainly used by recreational boating.
traffic
There are good bus connections to Malmö from Skanör-Falsterbo , which are operated on behalf of the Skånetrafik transport association. The buses pass through the Falsterbo Canal , which shortens the sea route between the Baltic Sea and the Öresund . The canal marks the border between Skåne and the Falsterbo peninsula .
