Skatoon Syndicate
Skatoon Syndikat is a ska band from Berlin , which was active from 1997 to 2005 and invented the style name “Berlin Ska”.
history
On January 28, 1997, the young musicians met for the first time for a rehearsal in the basement of an occupied house in East Berlin (Kleine Rosenthaler Str.). Some band members came from the punk area (Veit's dance), others from big bands. The band concentrated on the offbeat- heavy Ska from the beginning . After smaller appearances in the private sector, u. a. in the East Berlin youth club WB13 , followed in the spring of 1998 by the first big appearance in the Berlin club SO36 as the opening act for No Sports .
In 1998 there were major changes in line-up for the first time. In the same year her song Skatoon Syndikat was recorded on the Deutschstunde sampler of the Berlin ska label Pork Pie . In 1999 the band celebrated successes at the Berlin ska festivals ApoSKAlypse and SKAlympics. In the same year they performed in the legendary Berlin-Weißenseer Kulturhaus Peter Edel. In 2000 Skatoon Syndikat played in the opening act for The Slackers from New York.
The band initially performed mainly in Berlin and the surrounding area ( Brandenburg ), but also made a name for themselves in the ska scene in the rest of Germany. Over time, the band expanded their radius of action to Italy, France and Switzerland. Here contacts to befriended Skabands were often used - e.g. B. Chiquita Skaband (I) or Plenty Enuff (CH) - who were invited to Berlin in return. The Skatoon Syndicate and the Hamburg Kurorchester (later K-MOB ) had a close friendship with many concerts together . The dress code at concerts followed the obligatory 2-tone Ska outfit with a black suit, white shirt and tie.
In 2000, the band produced their first album in-house ... because you can't party quietly! in an edition of 500 pieces. Together with the Hamburg spa orchestra, the 7 "vinyl split single Tasty Music was released.
The second and last album Ska res publica was released in 2002 with various multilingual songs ! . The band, which after the departure of the first singer "Lord Syndicator" in 2001 always had difficulties to occupy the vocal part permanently, also played for a while without a singer and played instrumental ska music extensively . This is documented by a second 7 "vinyl with four instrumental pieces.
Her last major tour took her to Switzerland and Germany in 2004. Not long after celebrating their seven-year anniversary, the band broke up in 2005. Some musicians continued to work on new musical projects, e.g. B. Los Exkisos, Urste Dubstars, Chapel # 3.
style
Skatoon Syndicate's ska was often fast and horny . At times the band had a five-part brass section. The style was classic third wave ska, but clearly influenced by reggae , dub and soul elements as well as from Russian and Spanish folk music to neoswing . The texts are mainly in German, partly in English and also a little in Spanish and Russian. They themselves described their style as "Berlin Ska".
