The Skovgaard Museum ( Danish Skovgaard Museet ) is an art museum in Viborg , Denmark , dedicated to the generations of members of the family of artists around PC Skovgaard . It was founded in 1937 and is now located in the Old Town Hall ( gamle rådhus ) of Viborg. The building erected in 1728 by the Altona master builder Claus Stallknecht is located at Domkirkestræde 2–4 not far from Viborg Cathedral .

Emergence

The Skovgaard Museum was originally designed by Viborgs City Council in honor of Joakim Frederik Skovgaard . It was supposed to document the origin of the frescoes and ceiling paintings of the Viborg Cathedral created by Skovgaard between 1901 and 1913 . In his picture program he had taken up scenes from the Old and New Testament and thus designed around 2000 square meters of wall and ceiling area. However, Skovgaard stipulated that the museum should be dedicated to the entire family, since, in addition to his father, his siblings Niels Kristian and Susette Cathrine were also artistically active. Artists who were involved in the decoration of the cathedral should also be represented. In return, the Skovgaard family's art collection was donated.

collection

The collection begins with PC Skovgaard's landscapes from the Danish Golden Age ( den danske guldalder ). It includes works by his three children; Landscapes, themes of Christianity, folk wisdom and Norse mythology. The following generations of the family are also represented. In addition to paintings, drawings, graphics and ceramics, there is a handicraft collection from around 1900.

The collection also includes works by companions such as Thorvald Bindesbøll , Herman Wilhelm Bissen , HA Brendekilde , Janus la Cour , Hermann Ernst Freund , Lorenz Frølich , Constantin Hansen , Christen Købke , Christian August Lorentzen , Johan Thomas Lundbye , Harald Slott-Møller and Frederik Vermehren . The assistants for the cathedral painting are represented by Niels Larsen Stevns (1864–1941), Arne Lofthus (1881–1962), Viggo Pedersen (1854–1926) and Povl Jerndorff (1885–1933).

In addition to the permanent collection, the museum shows changing exhibitions several times a year, ranging from the 19th century to contemporary art. The exhibitions create different perspectives on the museum collection, but at the same time the collection also opens up new perspectives for the perception of the temporary exhibitions.

For example, in 2014/2015, in collaboration with Øregaard Museum in Hellerup , Nivaagaard Malerisamling (Nivå near Helsingør ), Skovgaard Museet and Ribe Art Museum, the exhibition: Martinus Rørbye - Det nære og det fjerne.
