Janus Andreas Bartholin la Cour (born September 5, 1837 in Ringkøbing , † October 13, 1909 in Odder / Jutland ) was a Danish landscape painter in the tradition of the Golden Age of Danish painting.

Life

Janus la Cour was a descendant of the family (Dornonville de) la Cour , who originally came from France and immigrated to Denmark in 1732 . He was born in Timgård near Ringkøbing in 1837 as the son of the landowner and politician ( State Deputy ) Otto August la Cour (1796-1860) and his wife Ane Cathrine Strandbygaard (1796-1879). La Cour began drawing landscapes at the age of 7–8. In 1846 his talent was discovered by Emmerik Høegh-Guldberg (1807-1881), a painter and teacher at the Aarhus Cathedral School, where la Cour was accepted that same year. It was here that he became friends with Christian Blache (1838–1920), son of the director and later a marine painter. He received private lessons at Høegh-Guldberg between 1850 and 1853.

In 1853 he came to Copenhagen, where he first received private lessons from Frederik Christian Kiærskou and from 1854 from Vilhelm Marstrand . It was not until 1857 that he became a student of the Royal Danish Academy of Art , but had already made his debut two years earlier at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (Forårsudstilling) with his painting Strandparti ved Helgenæs . He was to be represented here regularly with his works until his death. Encouraged by the art historian Niels Laurits Høyen (1798–1870), he contacted PC Skovgaard in 1856 . Friendship with the older, more experienced landscape painter was of vital importance to la Cour. Without having a real student relationship with him, they inspired each other. From 1861 to 1884 he also lived in the house of the Skovgaard family in Copenhagen and became a mentor for the artistic training of Skovgaard's three children, Joakim Frederik , Niels Kristian and Susette Cathrine .

In 1861 he won the Neuhausenske Premium (Neuhausenske Præmier) for Tidlig sommermorgen ud over en eng (Early summer morning next to a meadow) and in 1865, 1866 and 1868 he received a travel grant from the Academy. These financial resources enabled him to study trips that took him to France and Italy from 1865–1867 and to Switzerland and again to Italy from 1868–1870. He was to visit these countries several times later. In 1871 la Cour received another honor, the Thorvaldsen medals , the exhibition medal on Charlottenborg for En aftenstund ved Nemisøen (evening time at Nemisee ). The following year he became a member of the Academy and in 1883 the Swedish Academy of Art. In 1888 he was appointed titular professor and in 1892 knight of the Dannebrog Order.

In 1884 he retired to Jutland and settled in the Aarhus area. Here he spent the rest of his life, only interrupted by further trips to the south. His withdrawal was deliberate with the intention of escaping the Copenhagen art world. As a landscape painter associated with the academic tradition of the Eckersberg School, this was too modern for him with its trends such as open-air painting (en plain air).

Janus la Cour remained unmarried, he died in 1909 in Odder near Aarhus. His work was listed in a biography of over 870 known works in 1928. In 1901, more than 200 of his works were on view in a solo exhibition by Foreningen for national art .

Janus la Cour had an almost submissive awe of the Golden Age. In his pictures he depicts natural idylls without figurative accessories, they are inspired by the great classical landscape painters such as Salomon van Ruysdael , Herman Swanevelt and Claude Lorrain . On his numerous trips to Italy he mainly visited the area around Rome, Tivoli with the park and the Villa d'Este and Lake Nemi in the Alban Mountains . In Denmark, La Cour found his favorite motifs in East Jutland, the area around Aarhus and Silkeborg, which he depicted most frequently in heavy rain and cloudy conditions. Here he repeatedly portrayed the flat roads, the heathland, the wooded rolling hills and also the coastline of the Baltic Sea, often with a melancholy mood.

Janus la Cour's works are represented in all important Danish museums, such as the Statens Museum for Kunst , Den Hirschsprungske Samling , the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum , the Skovgaard Museum in Viborg and other museums in Nivågård, Odense, Aalborg, Maribo, Skagen, Ribe and Varde. In Germany, the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald is also able to show several works thanks to a donation from the art collector Christoph Müller .
