Slave to the Empire is the debut album by the US band T&N , released in 2012 .

Emergence

In 2010 an attempt was made to bring the band Dokken back together in their most commercially successful formation, consisting of George Lynch (guitar), Jeff Pilson ( bass ), Mick Brown (drums) and singer Don Dokken . This project failed in December 2010 when Don Dokken decided to continue working with the then current formation of his band.

In 2011, George Lynch worked with Pilson, Brown and drummer Brian Tichy ( Billy Idol , Whitesnake ) on songs for his band Lynch Mob . Oni Logan, vocalist for the group, however, didn't think this new material would suit the band. Lynch, Pilson and Brown, who had already played together for Dokken, then recorded numerous Dokken songs they had written with the participation of various guest singers such as Sebastian Bach , Doug Pinnick ( King's X ), Tim "Ripper" Owens and Geoff Tate ( Queensrÿche ), partly with changed arrangements, new on. They also recorded other newly written pieces in the line-up of Lynch, Pilson and Tichy, with Pilson taking over the vocals.

The album Slave to the Empire contained twelve tracks, five of which belong to the work of the Dokken group, namely Tooth and Nail, (sung by Doug Pinnick) after which T&N originally named itself, It's not Love, (Robert Mason) Into the Fire, Alone Again (Sebastian Bach) and Kiss of Death (Tim Owens). All songs have in common that they were released on the most commercially successful Dokken albums, namely Tooth and Nail , Under Lock and Key and Back for the Attack . Don Dokken was also involved in the songwriting of two songs, the remaining three were written by the current T&N members. The other seven songs on Slave to the Empire are new compositions.

From the beginning it was planned to split the material that was created during the 2011 work on two albums. For this reason, for example, the vocal contributions by Geoff Tate or Sass Jordan are not found on Slave to the Empire.

reception

The Whiskey Soda website wrote about the album that T&N was "something of a 75 percent Dokken reunion - at least for five songs on which George Lynch, Jeff Pilson and" Wild "Mick Brown played together". It is all about "new recordings of Dokken classics with changing singers." At Tooth & Nail, "Doug Pinnick (King's X) is on the microphone, at It's Not Love the former Lynch Mob frontman Robert Mason." At Into The Fire sang Jeff Pilson himself. For Alone Again T&N had brought Sebastian Bach into the studio. Surprisingly, "but he doesn't convince" with the "Don Dokken of the 1980s", "the Sebastian Bach of the 2010s couldn't compete." In contrast, "Tim" Ripper "Owens missed the Kiss Of Death with a completely new lethality." All new recordings apply “But unfortunately that the modern, earthy production has taken the charm away from the songs a bit”. The heavier sound would “clearly have been at the expense of the atmosphere.” After all, the title song “would have fitted well on a Dokken Reunion album, with the typical guitar sound of George Lynch and a lot of pressure in the rhythm.” The remaining songs “lacked lasting melodies or at least a few good ideas. "
