Slavko Vorkapić
Slavoljub "Slavko" Vorkapić (Cyrillic: Славољуб "Славко" Воркапић; English: Slavko Vorkapich; * March 17, 1894 in Dobrinci , Syrmia , Austria-Hungary (today incorporated into Ruma , Serbia ); † October 20, 1976 in Mijas , Spain ) was a Yugoslav - American director and film editor who was best known for his montage sequences. He also taught at the USC School of Cinematic Arts for some time .
Life
Slavko Vorkapić was born on March 17, 1894 in the village of Dobrinci, then Austria-Hungary . His father Petar Vorkapić, a town clerk, enabled him to get a good education. After finishing primary school, Vorkapić therefore attended a well-known secondary school near Sremska Mitrovica , where he took his first steps in the direction of art and drawing. He went to school with Mileva Marić , Albert Einstein's first wife . Vorkapić continued his education in Zemun and later in the Famous Art School in Belgrade .
After Vorkapić emigrated to the USA in 1920, he found work in Hollywood from 1921 , initially as a painter and actor. He later made a name for himself as a special effects artist , film editor and director. He is responsible for a whole series of films, mainly documentary and experimental. He is best known for his montage sequences, which he shot for various film studios as parts of feature films. For the sequences, he used a variety of film and graphic techniques in order to depict part of the plot in a timely manner.
From 1949 to 1951, Vorkapić was a professor in the film department at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles . In the 1950s, he started teaching at the Belgrade Theater Academy . In 1955 he shot his last feature film in Yugoslavia.
Slavko Vorkapić died of a heart attack in Spain on October 20, 1976 .
