Slobodyschtsche ( Ukrainian Слободище ; Russian Слободище Slobodishche ) is a village in the south of the Ukrainian Oblast Zhytomyr with about 900 inhabitants (2001).
The village is located in Berdychiv Raion on the banks of the Hnylopjat ( Гнилоп'я́ть ), a 99 km long tributary of the Teteriv and is the only village in the 40.325 km² district of the same name . The district center of Berdychiv is located 24 km to the southeast, the city of Chudniv 30 km to the west and the Oblast center of Zhytomyr is located 45 km to the northeast of Slobodyschtsche. In the southeast, Slobodyschtsche borders the village of Schwajkivka .
history
In the village first mentioned in 1550, the battle of Slobodyschtsche (Ukrainian Слободищенська битва ) took place on October 7, 1660 as part of the Russo-Polish War of 1654–1667 , in which the Zaporozhian Cossacks under Jurij Khmelnyzkyj from a Tatar - Polish army under Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski was beaten, whereupon Khmelnyzkyj had to complete the treatise of Slobodyschtsche (Ukrainian Слободищенський трактат ) with Poland-Lithuania; a treaty that obliged the hetmanate to fight with the Poles against tsarist Russia .
Personalities
The art historian, theologian and philosopher Dmytro Stepowyk was born here in 1938 .
