So Hard to Forget is a jazz album by Bucky Pizzarelli . The recordings, which were made on January 28 and 29, 2008 in the New York Nola studios, were released in 2008 on Arbors Records .

background

Bucky Pizzarelli played a repertoire on So Hard to Forget that includes American pop standards, pieces by Duke Ellington , Spanish and Italian works of classical music, and two compositions by the almost forgotten West Coast studio musician George M. Smith . Federico Moreno Torroba's three-movement “Sonatina in A” is a neoclassical piece with a Spanish timbre from 1965, which the composer dedicated to the guitar virtuoso Andrés Segovia , to whom Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco also wrote his chamber piece Tarantella Opus 87a in 1936 (in 2/4 time instead of for the typical Italian folk dance of the same name in 6/8 time). For numbers like “It's Easy to Remember”, Pizzarelli is accompanied by bassist Jerry Bruno, who has worked for the guitarist for many years, as well as cellist Jesse Levy, violist Valerie Levy and violinists Aaron Weinstein and Sara Caswell. Guitarist Frank Vignola joined as a duo partner for “Boots Blues” and Prelude to a Kiss . The final track “Last Night When We Were Young” is an unaccompanied solo pizzarellis.

reception

Michael G. Nastos gave the album four stars in Allmusic and said, fortunately, this collaboration between legitimate jazz strings and the legendary experienced guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli does not suffer from the saturation of sucrose by the strings, as these sessions are designed with a lot of taste, class and substance were played. This album is a pleasant listening experience that reveals more with additional games. It is also another good achievement in the long and illustrious career of one of the truly great jazz guitarists of all time.

Mike Joyce, who reviewed the album for JazzTimes , commented, “Pizzarelli opens the album with a version of“ Laura ”that initially shows his talent as a soloist, capable of an evergreen with light arpeggios , sparkling harmonic and chordal settings refresh that inevitably go together. Not long afterwards, the experienced guitarist and patriarch of the jazz family, who is playing solo again, presents “It's Easy to Remember” in the same artistic way. Further insights into his outstanding autonomy can be found elsewhere on the album ”, not least the acoustic interpretations of the first and second movements of Moreno Torroba's“ Sonatina in A ”. When Vignola makes his entry, contributing to eight pieces in this collection, which consists mostly of pop standards, the pairing of guitarists helps produce great chemistry and delightful collaboration, like the performances of "Prelude to a Kiss" and "Boots Blues".
