Jerry Bruno

Frank "Jerry" Bruno (born January 10, 1920 in Rochester , New York ; † June 22, 2020 ) was an American jazz musician ( double bass ) of swing and mainstream jazz .

Live and act

In 1948 Bruno belonged to the rhythm section of the Vaughn Monroe Big Band with guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli ; with Pizzarelli he would work together frequently in the course of his career. In 1951 he played in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, with which the first recordings were made, and in the same year with the Mills Brothers (“Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone”) and Bing Crosby (“Without a Word of Warning "). As a session musician he also recorded with the singer Paul Anka , on whose successful track “Diana” he worked with Pizarrelli, Irving Wexler and Panama Francis . In the following years he worked with Leo Anthony , Doug Duke , Dick Garcia / Bill Evans (1955), in Don Costa's big band , the Dixieland All Stars (with Pee Wee Erwin , Cutty Cutshall , Peanuts Hucko , Moe Wechsler , Al Caiola ) From 1979 he was accompanist for Frank Sinatra , with whom he also appeared in Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall ; he also played with Liza Minnelli and Louis Prima .

From the 1980s, Bruno continued to play in the trio of Bucky Pizzarelli, with whom he also recorded with Red Norvo , John Pizzarelli and the vocal quartet Monday Off ( Christmas Time Is Here , 2001). He was also a member of the Tony Corbiscello Big Band and recorded with Dave Bennett ( Celebrates 100 Years of Benny Goodman ), Tony Mottola , Marlene VerPlanck and Joe Wilder . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 27 recording sessions between 1967 and 2016.In Woody Allen's film Harry besides himself (1997) Jerry Bruno appeared as a musician with the Stebbins Hall Band . In 2013 he jammed with pizzarelli. In 2017 he played in a duo with pianist Russ Kassoff at the Glen Rock Inn in Glen Rock (New Jersey) , in 2019 in a trio with Kassoff and singer Catherine Dupuis in Madison (New Jersey) .

Bruno died at the end of June 2020 at the age of 100.
