Soak (spelling: SOAK ) is the stage name of the Northern Irish singer-songwriter Bridie Monds-Watson (born May 2, 1996 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ). It is a contamination made up of the words soul and folk . However, Soak emphasizes that neither of these two genres can describe her style of music . The British daily The Guardian describes her music as "a living portrait of teenage thinking ".

Life

Soak was born in Belfast but grew up in Derry . In 2010 she bought her first guitar. In 2011 she played in her first band. In the same year she had her lesbian coming out . In March 2012 her first EP Trains was released and in July 2012 her second EP Sea Creatures was self-distributed. In 2012 she had over 70 appearances, including in October 2012 at the Other Voices Festival in Dingle . On October 30, 2013 Soak appeared in the opening act for Tegan and Sara at Docks in Hamburg and thus had her first appearance on a German stage. In February and March 2014, she supported George Ezra on his Ireland and UK tours. At the beginning of March 2014 their first official EP Blud was released on the label Goodbye Records of the band Chvrches . Soak performed for the first time at Glastonbury Festival in June 2014 . Her second appearance at this festival followed in June 2015. At the end of 2014 she was signed to Rough Trade Records and the BBC put her on the Sound of 2015 longlist, a list of 15 newcomers who are forecast to have a breakthrough the following year. In January 2015, the single Sea Creatures was released on Rough Trade Records. In May 2015 she released her debut album Before We Forget How To Dream . It reached number 19 on the Irish album charts and number 37 on the British album charts. After performing at Haldern Pop in August 2015, Soak completed her first club tour through German cities from September 29 to October 13, 2015, which took her to Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin and Munich. In March 2016, Before We Forget How To Dream was awarded the Choice Music Prize in the Album of the Year category. That same month, Soak won the European Border Breakers Award as Representative of Ireland . In May and June 2016 she accompanied The Lumineers on their US and Canada tour.

In 2019 Soak sang Country Air in the Finnish-British animated series Moominvalley. Her second studio album, Grim Town , was released on April 26, 2019 .
