Soll und haben is a German silent film from 1924 by Carl Wilhelm based on the novel of the same name by Gustav Freytag .

action

Anton Wohlfart begins his professional career after the death of his father, an accountant, at his request in Mr. Schröter's office in Wroclaw. In the company, the newcomer got to know a number of people such as Sabine, the boss's sister, and the businessman's son Fritz von Fink, who was training here as a volunteer. Anton quickly becomes friends with him. When he meets the young baroness Lenore Rothsattel, Anton immediately falls in love with her. On the same day he also met Veitel Itzig, a former schoolmate. He is not particularly scrupulous in his methods of getting very rich quickly. Itzig works for the Jewish businessman Hirsch Ehrenthal and thus meets the once successful lawyer Hippus. Hippus' reputation has suffered badly since he was embroiled in crooked business. Due to a lavish lifestyle, the Rothsattel family soon got into financial worries, which Ehrenthal, Itzig and Hippus want to take advantage of. When Ehrenthal learns that Baron Rothsattel cannot pay his debts, he gives the nobleman a disastrous piece of advice, which is particularly beneficial to Ehrenthal.

Things develop so tragically for the Rothsattels that the baron tries to shoot himself in his desperation. He survived the attempted suicide, but went blind. Fritz von Fink decides to travel to the USA. Anton meanwhile supports the Rothsattel family in preserving their newly acquired Polish property and helps them to defend the property against Polish irregulars. Fritz, who had returned from America, arrived in good time and helped to blow up the Polish siege ring. During this eventful time Fritz and Lenore von Rothsattel get closer and finally get engaged. Anton and old Rothsattel fall apart, whereupon Anton leaves the estate and returns to Schröter's office. The meanwhile quite wealthy Veitel gets into serious conflict with Hippus, as he tries to blackmail him, and kills him in an affect. Morally broken and pursued by the police, Itzig drowns while trying to escape. Meanwhile, the account owner Schröter offers Anton Wohlfahrt to become his partner. He accepts and becomes engaged to Sabine Schröter.

criticism

“Gustav Freytag's famous novel“ Soll und haben ”was filmed in 1924. Of course, the main motifs of the novel were taken over into the film from the plethora of action in the literary source, and this was the only way to create a clear and concise play of light - although 27 actors were involved. "
