Solvent naphtha , also known as solvent benzene , heavy benzene or (English) aromatic naphtha , is the collective name for mixtures of light aromatic hydrocarbons obtained from coal tar , crude oil or oil shale . Solvent naphtha is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor under standard conditions.

The part of the name “Naphtha” refers primarily to the mean boiling point , not to the chemical composition of the mixture. In naphtha in the strict sense is a predominantly paraffinic ( aliphatic ) fraction of crude oil distillation while Solvent Naphtha is traditionally distilled from coal tar and contains mostly aromatic components, as indicated by the designations solvent benzene , heavy benzene and Aromatic Naphtha is expressed. In the meantime, however, solvent naphtha is also produced from products of petroleum distillation through catalytic reforming .

Solvent naphtha from petroleum distillation consists mainly of C 9 to C 13 aromatics ( C3-benzenes , toluene , xylene ), which are also synthetically produced from isoparaffins, as well as naphthalene

Coal naphtha solvent consisting predominantly of C 7 - to C 10 - aromatic compounds such as naphthalenes, indene , phenolic , C3-benzenes , toluene , xylene , benzofuran with admixtures of cycloalkanes and other paraffinic hydrocarbons.

According to DIN standard 51633 (1986-11) “Solvent Naphtha light” - C 9 may contain a maximum of 1% ethylbenzene , 10% xylenes and 15% each of propylbenzene or mesitylene . "Heavy solvent naphtha" - C 10 must contain less than 1% xylenes, propylbenzene and mesitylene.

Depending on the boiling point and flash point, a distinction is made between low, medium and high boiling solvent naphtha, which also have different CAS numbers .

Solvent Naphtha, widely known under the trade name "Solvesso", is an inexpensive, organic solvent and is used as such for natural and synthetic resins (including alkyd resins and epoxy resin esters ), for printing inks in the textile and paper industry , as a thinner for paints, varnishes and lacquers (also coating raw materials, such as paint curing agents), as well as in the manufacture of herbicides and insecticides .
