Songea is one of five districts of the region Ruvuma in Tanzania . In the north it is bounded by the regions of Njombe and Morogoro , in the east by the Namtumbo district , in the south by Mozambique and in the west by the districts of Nyasa and Mbinga .

geography

The district consists of the three councils Songea Municipal (also called Songea Urban or Songea Mjini), Songea District Council (Songea Rural) and Madaba District Council . Songea has a size of 12,454 square kilometers and 377,130 inhabitants (as of 2012).

Songea is located in the southern highland zone between 300 and 2000 meters above sea level. The main river in the district is the Rovuma . It rises west of the city of Songea and, while flowing south, forms the border with the neighboring districts of Mbinga and Nyasa in the west. After changing direction to the east, it is the border river to Mozambique in the south. To the north the land rises to the Matengo Mountains .

The capital Songea is 1116 meters above sea level. The climate here is warm and temperate, according to the effective climate classification . It rains mainly in the months of November to April. Every year around 1000 millimeters of precipitation fall with an average temperature of 21 degrees Celsius.

history

The name Songea comes from the Ngoni chief with the name Songea Mbano, a resistance fighter against German colonial rule. The area was a separate division in 1922, but became part of Division West in 1948. The district in its current form was founded in 1984.

population

The population in the district grew from 287,790 in 2002 to 377,130 in 2012. During the same period, the literacy rate of the rural population aged 15 and over rose from 82 to 84 percent and that of the urban population from 90 to 94 percent. In rural areas around seven percent of those over five also spoke English, compared with 16.5 percent in the city (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 71 primary schools and 20 secondary schools for the education of young people (as of 2019).
  • Health: In Songea there is a hospital run by a church institution and a state health center. Of the 30 pharmacies, 19 are publicly operated and 11 privately operated.
  • Water: Two thirds of the population are supplied with clean water (as of 2019).

Economy and Infrastructure

The majority of the population lives from agriculture, which also contributes eighty percent to the domestic product (as of 2016/2017).

  • Agriculture: The main crops for personal use are corn, beans, rice, cassava, sweet potatoes and bananas. Coffee, cashew nuts and tobacco are grown for sale.
  • Fishing: Fishing takes place in the communities on the Ruvuma River. Around two percent of the rural population live from fishing (as of 2012).
  • Trade: The trade is carried out by individuals or micro-businesses that mainly sell corn and tobacco.
  • Roads: The main road connection is the national road T6, which runs from Mtwara via Lindi to Songea and further north to Njombe . In Songea, the T12 national road branches off from it to Mbamba Bay on Lake Malawi . There are around 1000 kilometers of municipal roads in Songea, most of which are gravel.
  • Airport: Songea has a regional airport with a runway length of 1625 meters and daily flights to Dar es Salaam (as of 2020).

Others

In 1988, Songea Rural Provincial Governor Dr. Naleo N'ruvanu arrested. Police found him 98 tusks of African elephants . he was sentenced to 24 years in prison, but was released after only 2 years. The elephant tusks were publicly burned in Songea City .
