Sophiya Haque

Sophiya Haque (born June 14, 1971 as Syeda Sophia Haque in Portsmouth , Hampshire , England , † January 17, 2013 in London , England) was an internationally known British actress , singer , television presenter and dancer .

Her best-known role was as Poppy Morales in the British television series Coronation Street between 2008 and 2009. She also appeared in numerous films and musicals, not infrequently in the Bollywood genre.

Life

Childhood and youth

Haque was born to a Bangladeshi father and a British mother. She was the youngest of three daughters.

Her mother Thelma, a teacher, took care of her upbringing. Haque attended Orpington Priory School and took dance lessons at Forrester's School of Dance from the age of two and a half. At the age of 13 she moved to London, where she lived with her father Amirul Haque, a restaurateur, with his second wife. She then received a solid vocal and theatrical training at the Arts Educational Schools in London.

Career

Haque's career began as a singer in the band Akasa ; they signed a contract with Warner Bros. in 1988 .

She then began a television career in the Far East. She worked for seven years as a presenter for MTV Asia and the Southeast Asian broadcaster Channel V. From 1994 she appeared regularly on Indian television. In 1997 she moved entirely to Mumbai to work full-time for Channel V. In 1999 she starred in her first Bollywood film, Khoobsurat .

She later made several internationally known films, including The Rising .

It wasn't until 2002 that Haque returned to the UK to star in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Bombay Dreams as Rani . She later appeared in several internationally known musicals, including the musical production Palace of the Winds of the West End Theater, and the British musical Wah! Wah! Girls .

In 2008 she had a small supporting role in the movie Wanted .

Between December 2008 and June 2009 she played her internationally best-known role Poppy Morales , the bartender and deputy manager of the fictional pub Rovers Return , in the British series Coronation Street .

In 2012 she appeared on the BBC's British series Fairy Tales. In the same year she starred in 15 episodes in the British mystery series House of Anubis . When she cooperated end of 2012 an additional production was at your cancer diagnosed.

Family life and death

Haque last lived with her partner David White, a musical director in Knaphill , Surrey England . The couple was building a houseboat when she fell ill.

The cancer diagnosis was made around Christmas 2012. Pneumonia developed from a blood clot in the lungs. Haque died in his sleep in a London hospital in the early hours of the morning of January 17, 2013, during a clinical examination.
