Sorell is a small town and suburb of Hobart in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located 33 km northeast of Hobart on Pitt Water Bay . The 2011 census counted 2,907 residents. The Tasman Highway (A3) runs through the city and the Arthur Highway (A9) branches off from it there.
The city was previously known as a station on the Hobart to Port Arthur road on the Tasman Peninsula . In 1872 the Sorell Causeway was opened, a dam on which the Tasman Highway runs from Cambridge via Midway Point and which separates the Orielton Lagoon from Pitt Water . This significantly shortened the distance from Hobart to Port Arthur, which used to pass through Richmond .
