The South Portland Street Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The bridge is also part of a category A monument ensemble.

history

A 14-arch wooden bridge based on a design by Robert Stevenson was built on the site in 1831 . It served the relief until the completion of the Broomielaw Bridge . The pedestrian bridge was closed in 1846 due to safety concerns. The old bridge was eventually demolished and replaced by what is now the South Portland Street Bridge. This was built between 1851 and 1853 according to a design by the Scottish architect Alexander Kirkland in collaboration with the engineer George Martin . In 1871 the bridge construction was revised by Bell & Miller . The work cost £ 6,836. Further modernizations took place in 1898, 1926, 1996 and 2004. In the 1920s, the hangers were completely replaced.

description

The wrought iron chain bridge spans the Clyde in Glasgow. It is located in the upper harbor between the Broomielaw Bridge and Victoria Bridge . Classicist pylons rise on both sides of the 126 m long and 4 m wide bridge . The sandstone pylons are designed as triumphal arches with ionic columns and Doric pilasters . The round arch with a relief archivolt and keystone closes with a frieze and cornices . The chains, made up of eye sticks , run in pairs above the main cornice and are braced in the ground. The cast iron superstructure is fixed to the hangers.
