Space Dandy ( Jap . スペース☆ダンディ, Supēsu Dandi ) is a Japanese anime - television series and manga series . The comedy - Space Opera , which was produced in 2013 and 2014, is about the adventures of three space travelers in search of new species. A computer game was also released for the franchise.
action
The series revolves around Dandy, an alien hunter in space who plays the role of a dandy and, together with his orderly robot assistant QT and his cat-like alien friend Meow, goes on a search for unexplored aliens. Strange things always happen to them in different places in the universe and they rush from one adventure to the next. Many pop culture references to science fiction, music, anime and net culture are drawn.
Manga series
The first manga series started in December 2013 in Young Gangan magazine on Square Enix . The series, written by Masafumi Harada and drawn by Park Sung-woo and Red Ice , also appeared in two anthologies. An English edition was published by Yen Press .
A second manga was also released in 2014 and comes from Hiroki Katsumata alone. The publication under the title Ore Space Dandy ( 俺 ス ペ ー ス ☆ ダ ン デ ィ ) appeared in English as I am Space Dandy .
Anime television series
The anime series was produced by Bones in Japan. Directed by Shingo Natsume and Shinichirō Watanabe . This resulted in two seasons with 26 episodes. The character design was designed by Yoshiyuki Ito and the artistic direction was Ryō Kōno and, for episode 9, Kevin Aymeric.
For the first time the series was broadcast from January 4, 2014 to October 27, 2014 on the television channel Adult Swim in the Toonami program block in North America. The Japanese premiere follows a day later on Tokyo MX . The series was published in 8 volumes on DVD and Blu-ray Disc and can also be viewed in German from several video-on-demand providers. Season 1 was released in August 2014, also set to German by Kazé Germany . The anime is marketed by Funimation in North America , Madman Entertainment in Australia and Anime Limited in the UK .

The opening theme is Viva Namida ( ビ バ ナ ミ ダ , Biba Namida ) and is sung by Yasuyuki Okamura . The ending theme is X-Jigen e Yōkoso ( X 次 元 へ よ う こ そ ) and is sung by Etsuko Yakushimaru . Additional songs are also played during the episodes:

computer game
The computer game Space Galga is based on Space Dandy and uses the gameplay of the arcade game Galaga . It was developed by Bandai Namco Games and released on January 24, 2014 for Android and February 6, 2014 for IOS .
reception
The series was positively received by TV Club and praised for the surreal stories and humor. In addition, the many parodies of science fiction and superheroes were positively highlighted by the embodiment of the space dandy. The Animania praises the changeable staging of the "crazy adventures", between shimmering neon colors and dark noir tone, which is especially something for fans of Shinichirō Watanabe and crazy space science fiction. The German version was also successful in synchronization and technical implementation.
