Place name interpretation

The place name is interpreted as "courtyard with stick / rod fence" or as "courtyard on an elongated, narrow parcel", a "spagen".

history

It was first mentioned in 1335. In 1343 the place was named "Dorf ze Spagen" in a document. The wasteland belonged to the Lords of Absberg as the Eichstätter fief.

In 1542 the estate was first described as "baurnhoff und ein Scheferey dabey". Since 1652 it belonged to the Teutonic Order in Absberg and from 1806 to the Bavarian market town of Absberg. In 1824 the Spagenhof was inhabited by six people. In 1856 the desert consisted of three houses with two Catholic families and eleven "souls" and belonged to the Kgl. Gunzenhausen district court. Sheep- farming was the main activity . In 1912 there were eight residents, in 1950 four residents.

The last owners were Michael and Maria Ortner, who used the farm as a house. In the 1980s, the Spagenhof was demolished in the course of the establishment of the Franconian Lake District.
