highest dam in Styria, natural bathing lake

The Hirzmann-Stausee or Speicher Hirzmann (also Hierzmann-Stausee ) is a reservoir in the communities of Edelschrott and St. Martin am Wöllmißberg in the Austrian state of Styria . In addition to the Langmann reservoir, it forms one of two dams on the Teigitsch River and supplies the St. Martin , Arnstein and Teigitschmühle power plants with headwaters.

Location and surroundings

The reservoir is nestled between Herzogberg and Wöllmißberg, two eastern foothills of the Styrian border mountains , at 708  m above sea level. A. , at the middle of the Teigitsch . Similar to a fjord, the reservoir extends over 5 km in a north-west-south-east direction and covers an area of almost 42 ha, which makes it the third largest reservoir in Styria after the Salza reservoir and the Packer reservoir a few kilometers upstream . The closest places are Edelschrott northwest and Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg northeast of the lake. The area share of the municipality of St. Martin is negligible at just under 2%. The immediate lakeshore is lined with dense mixed forest except for short sections at the Edelschrott reservoir and the dam .

dam

The dam

The dam was built between 1947 and 1950 under the direction of architect Fritz Haas by STEWEAG and ensured a considerable improvement in the storage capacity of the KW Teigitsch group . The 58.6 m high barrier structure in the form of a vaulted wall represents the highest dam in Styria. The building material was brought to a cable car from the Graz-Köflacher Bahn by light rail, from whose top station it came to the construction site with another light rail.

The lake, with a storage capacity of up to 7.1 million m³, served as additional storage space for the Arnstein power station until the St. Martin power station was built between 1964 and 1965 , but the water was drained unused into the Teigitsch stream bed. Since then, the annual storage facility has been supplying the St. Martin power plant via a 985 m long pressure tunnel , which generates 15,500 MWh of electricity annually with a bottleneck capacity of 9.8 MW .

According to the ÖWB , STEWEAG had to clear the passage over the dam wall for local interests. Since the foot bridge was removed, it was not possible to cross the barrier crown from May 2017. The long stretch of water could only be crossed on a bridge near Edelschrott. In March 2019, an "alpine path" (simple stairs) was set up on the west side of the dam, and on the east side the ascent is via the street. Thus, the reservoir can be circumnavigated again for hikers.

tourism

The reservoir is located in the Lipizzanerheimat tourist region and is often used as a natural bathing lake and for fishing . The shore can be reached via a municipal road that leads from Edelschrott to the Herzogberg. The historic Ströhberne Bruck'n and a publicly accessible bathing jetty are located on it in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir bridge. You can also borrow a rowing boat from the Seeblick buffet . Part of the Hans Kloepfer circular hiking trail to and from Köflach leads along the north-east bank .

The dam at the southeast end of the lake can be reached on foot via a non-public road operated by Verbund AG. A few minutes' walk from the dam is a climbing garden (difficulty 3 to 8 ) on a south-west slope made of Stainzer slab gneiss .
