Location and building description

Engraving " AD 1879 / Ren (oviert) 1900", including the trefoil relief
Inscription under the flaking green paint layer: “A. Knoevenagel, Hanover, 1907 "

The barrage is located in the Kleefeld district opposite the horse tower at the beginning of Kaulbachstraße , at the entrance to Eilenriede . It is labeled “A. Knoevenagel / Hannover / 1907 ”and thus dates back to the last year of the company's founder Albert Knoevenagel .

Immediately behind it is the Wolfsgraben underpass, built in 1879 and renovated in 1900 . In the middle of the underpass, a stone with a (raised) relief is inserted on the upper wall : The clover leaf is one of the old landmarks of the city of Hanover and here indicates the owner . Above it is engraved into the stone as year of construction (s) " AD 1879 / Ren (oviert) 1900" .

In front of the barrage there is an adjustable, smaller shut-off for an inflow on the side in the surrounding wall. The three letters "GEK" can be read in a vertical oval on the metal plate .

The Wolfsgraben was part of the ditch system through the Eilenriede, which was navigable until the late Middle Ages: Dried peat was transported by barges from the surrounding area to Hanover via the ship ditch to Aegidientorplatz and sold there as fuel.

Around 1898: Wolfsgraben and underpass before renovation

A picture postcard from Karl F. Wunder shows the place before the renovation of the trench underpass under the (today's) street Am Pferdeturm . The enlargement of the collotype photograph shows: On the postcard the stone with the clover is attached in the middle of the tunnel below, directly above the water. Today, after the renovation in 1900, the same stone has been added to the upper wall.
