The Sphinx is a 12mR regatta yacht that was launched at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lemwerder (construction number 3312) on April 28, 1939 as the last of a series of ten twelve . It was designed by the shipyard owner Henry Rasmussen and was built of mahogany on iron frames .

Together with her sister ships Inga (sail number G 1), Anita (G 2) and Ashanti (G 3), built shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War , Sphinx (G 4) sailed very successfully as a club ship under the stand of the North German Regatta Club (NRV) Regatta courses. The special speed of the Sphinx was due to the 30 cm longer waterline within the construction tolerances. Anita sails actively on the Baltic Sea, Ashanti fell victim to a fire. Sphinx was sold by the NRV to Hans and Wolfgang Freudenberg (Hamburg) and renamed Lobito .

In 1958, the acquired German Navy : (today German Navy by the competent procurement) Rear Admiral Bernhard Rogge , the two twelve Inga and Lobito (ex Sphinx ) for the training of aspiring naval officers. Inga was in Westwind , Sphinx in east wind renamed and the Naval Academy Mürwik in Flensburg - Mürwik assumed. The 12mR yachts were given a guard rail for safety reasons , otherwise little was changed in the equipment from 1939 (no modern winches , but tackles and blocks as in the shipyard delivery).

In 2005 both yachts were sold through VEBEG . The Sphinx (ex Ostwind ) acquired an owner trio consisting of Oliver Berking ( Robbe & Berking ), Gorm Gondesen and Jochen Frank from Flensburg.

From 2006 to 2008 the owners carried out a thorough restoration of the Sphinx very close to the original plans of the shipyard with the aim of preserving the 12mR yacht for as long as possible and using it competitively in regattas in the future . Today she sails under the stand of the Flensburg Sailing Club . The yacht received its old name Sphinx and its original boat color black and blue. During the restoration work, all planks in the underwater area were replaced and all iron frames were replaced with frames made of stainless steel . The entire interior, the pulpit and pushpit including the guard rail were removed. The winches and blocks for operating the sails were, however, adapted to the modern conditions and the demands of today's regatta sailing. The weight reduction compared to the equipment stand as an easterly wind makes a water pass 10 cm downwards clear. The sail plan is measured as follows: Mainsail : 140 m², Genoa I: 100 m², Genoa II: 85 m² and spinnaker 265 m².
