Playground is a documentary film of the DEFA Studios for newsreels and documentaries from Heinz Müller from the year 1966 .

action

The camera shows a playground between the trees and residential buildings in the Helmholtzplatz complex in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg . There are swings, seesaws and climbing frames on the sandy ground, surrounded by seating. The devices are occupied by children who stay here after school. Others take the opportunity to do their schoolwork in the park. A group of preschoolers with their kindergarten teacher storms the climbing frame. Citizens looking for relaxation on the benches watch the children while the footpaths are swept.

A look over the entire area shows the residential area in the vicinity of Helmholtzplatz. With a Sprengwagen the Sanitation street is cleaned. A woman tends her flowers on a balcony of the neighboring houses. You can see the “Helmholtz-Klause”, a shoemaker's shop, a shop with the neon advertising “Fabrics - Trikotagen” and the “Helmholtz pharmacy” as well as undertakers who carry a coffin from a residential building to push it into a hearse . Older and young people use the park to relax, to bring their purchases home by the shortest route or even to chat or to rest on the park benches, some just want to read a newspaper.

While two chess players have set up their board on a boundary wall of the lawn and are concentrating on the game, the skat players are settling down at different tables . This of course includes a tablecloth as a base and the eyes fall on the hands, playing cards and coins. Of course, there are also several viewers here who always want to know everything better. When it starts to rain with a thunderstorm, the place empties very quickly. But the benches and play equipment are occupied again just as quickly after the rain as if nothing had happened.

In the evening, half-strong young people with portable radios conquer the square. They sit or balance on the perimeter poles, smoke and chat. Young couples compete with the small children for space on the swings.
