The Spindler Straße is approximately 2.4 km long expressway in Berlin 's Treptow-Koepenick , which was laid out at the beginning of the 21st century. It leads from the street An der Wuhlheide to the street Glienicker Weg / Glienicker Straße. It is built on a dam and crosses the tracks of the Schöneweide – Spindlersfeld branch line and several streets with several bridges next to the Spree .

History and naming

Between 1909 and 1925, the first street already bore this name - it ran north of the S-Bahn line to Spindlersfeld from what was then Berliner Straße (since 1947: Schnellerstraße) to Rudower Straße and was built over when the Berlin city area was expanded.

From 1936 to 1962 there was another Spindlersfelder Straße in Spindlersfeld . This ran from Spindlersfeld train station to the villa of Kommerzienrat Wilhelm Spindler , the founder of the W. Spindler laundry and namesake of the Köpenick district. In 1962 it was renamed Ernst-Grube-Strasse after the politician and resistance fighter Ernst Grube .

On July 16, 2002, the new street was named in honor of Wilhelm Spindler .

Construction of a bypass road to the old town of Köpenick

The construction work on the first, northern section, which is mainly used to bypass the old town of Köpenick, was completed in October 2002 and the road was opened to public traffic on October 7, 2002. The new street section connects the street An der Wuhlheide via two new bridges ( Wilhelm-Spindler-Bridge and Köllnische Bridge) with Oberspreestrasse.

The second section to Glienicker Strasse was completed and opened on August 9, 2007. The Wendenheide bridge crosses the Oberspreestrasse and the Adlershofer bridge crosses the Ottomar-Geschke-Strasse.

Resistance to circumvention

Residents who had to give up their land due to the construction of the southern section of the street founded a citizens' initiative that spoke out against the construction of the street. The initiators denied the necessity of the complex route and complained about future noise pollution. It therefore took a long time until the Senate Department for Urban Development bought all 26 properties .

Significance and further planning

Above all, Spindlersfelder Straße enables a fast bypass of the old town of Köpenick and thus serves to calm traffic in the historic center. The Glienicker Weg , which follows the already developed Glienicker Straße, has also been extended to four lanes up to the Adlergestell .

Plans to create a connection from Märkische Allee in Berlin-Biesdorf to the south through Wuhlheide to Spindlersfelder Strasse date back to the late 1960s . The resulting Tangential Link Ost (TVO) would allow through traffic on the main roads running in north-south direction in Karlshorst ( Treskowallee and Waldowallee), Biesdorf (Köpenicker Straße), Kaulsdorf (Chemnitzer Straße), Mahlsdorf ( Hultschiner Damm ) and Köpenick ( Bahnhofstrasse) and thus relieve the burden. After these plans had been shelved by the Berlin Senate in the 1990s, a Senate resolution of May 28, 2013 cleared the way for further planning. The plan approval procedure is to begin in 2021. Completion is expected in 2028.
