description

Vegetative characteristics

The spur fritillary is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 18 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The leaves are glossy green. The two lowest leaves are (almost) opposite, elliptical to oblong-lanceolate and much larger than the linear-lanceolate upper ones.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from March to April. Rarely usually four to eight (one to ten) flowers stand together in a racemose inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six tepals are 10 to 18 millimeters long, dirty purple and have dark purple nerves. The bracts are bent outwards, making the flowers funnel-shaped to almost wheel-shaped.

The capsule fruit is 10 to 15 millimeters wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The spur fritillary thrives in Central Asia in the western Tian Shan and in the Alai Mountains at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.

The first description under the name ( Basionym ) Rhinopetalum stenantherum was made in 1873 by Eduard August von Regel in Trudy Imperatorskago S.-Peterburgskago Botaničeskago Sada , 3, p. 204. The new combination to Fritillaria stenanthera (Regel) Regel was also made in 1883 by Eduard August von Regel published in Trudy Imperatorskago S.-Peterburgskago Botaničeskago Sada , 8, p. 652.

use

The spur fritillary is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens.
