The Sport-Gymnasium Davos is a sports school in Davos in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

history

The idea of setting up a sports school in Davos goes back to the director of the Davos health resort and traffic association, Bruno Gerber , who established contacts in this regard at the World Economic Forum in 1986 and found out about similar institutions in Germany and Sweden. A working group dealt with the topic, drew up a concept and got in touch with sports associations and political decision-makers, including the municipality of Davos and the canton of Graubünden . In 1990, the Davos sports school project was handed over to the canton and the municipality, and in 1991 to the Federal Council .

In 1995 the Grand District Administrator voted to establish the SSGD ( Swiss Sports Gymnasium Davos ) school institute. It was difficult to find companies to support the project financially. In 1996 five main sponsors were found who agreed to give 100,000 francs a year for running the school. The school board and the foundation board met for the first time in November 1996 in Zurich . The most important decision concerned the date of the school's start. August 1997 was selected for this. Bruno Gerber became chairman of the school and foundation councils, and Peter Bieler was appointed as his deputy.

The school opened its doors on August 18, 1997. 36 students divided into three classes made up the first year. The first graduates left school in July 2010. There is the possibility of completing the commercial high school or the commercial secondary school. In December 2004 the school was recognized as the Olympic Sports School in Switzerland. In November 2005, Fredi Pargätzi took over the office of chairman of the school and foundation council from Bruno Gerber, who died in May 2005.

In 2006 the school was given the name National Competence Center by the Swiss Ski Association . In 2010 the name was changed from the Swiss Sports Gymnasium Davos to the Sports Gymnasium Davos Foundation . In November 2016 Christian Hew succeeded Pargätzi as chairman of the school and foundation council. In 2017, 135 students were taught in nine classes.
