Sports in St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

The Sport in St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha includes many traditional British sports . In the British overseas territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha , these are primarily cricket and football . In addition, golf and motocross as well as mountain biking and swimming are popular sports. Athletics , badminton , squash and sport shooting are mainly used on the island of St. Helena .

At the international level, the overseas territory mainly takes part in the Commonwealth Games , the Commonwealth Youth Games and the Island Games . The superordinate body of the sport is the National Amateur Sports Association of Saint Helena (NASAS).

Cricket

Cricket is the national sport in the overseas territory. League (November to May) and the national team are organized by the St. Helena Cricket Association . The association has been a member of the International Cricket Council and full member of the Africa Cricket Association since 2001 . Cricket is already being promoted in schools. In 2012, the national team took part in an international tournament in South Africa for the first time. The ICC Africa Twenty20 Division Three tournament won three of the seven games.

Like all other sports, cricket is played on St. Helena on the Francis Plain sports field, not far from Prince Andrew School in St. Paul’s District .

Soccer

St. Helena has an amateur league with 10 clubs, the Football League , which is part of the St. Helena Football Association . Due to financial bottlenecks, hardly any national soccer team games are played outside the island or even against other nations. However, the team already took part in the Island Games. The promotion of sport begins in the school and junior sector.

The situation is similar in the other areas of Ascension and Tristan da Cunha . With the Ascension Island Football Association and the Tristan da Cunha Football Association, there are their own umbrella organizations, but only friendship and cup games and, above all, due to the lack of players on Tristan da Cunha, no football league. At Ascension they play on the Longbeach soccer field , and on Tristan da Cunha on a sports field on the beach.

golf

Golf is played on St. Helena on a 9-hole golf course at St. Helena Golf Club (founded in 1899) in the Longwood district . The construction of an 18-hole golf course is planned in the Blue Hill district . On Tristan da Cunha there is also a golf course with the Hottentot Fence Tristan da Cunha Golf Course , which, however, actually represents a pasture area for farm animals and was only expanded with 18 holes and tees. There is also an 18-hole golf course on Ascension, the One Boat Golf Course .
