Spreetal , in Upper Sorbian Sprjewiny Doł , is a district of the Spreetal municipality in the Bautzen district in Upper Lusatia ( Saxony ). Spreetal is the smallest and at the same time the only district of the municipality that is neither on the Spree nor on the Kleiner Spree .

The Saxon-Brandenburg border ran right through the settlement founded in 1915 from 1990 to 1999.

geography

The Spreetal settlement is in the northwest of the municipality on the border with the state of Brandenburg . The federal road 97 runs from Spremberg to Hoyerswerda to the west-southwest of the town .

The Spreetal is surrounded by Schwarze Pump in the north, the industrial park Schwarze Pump in the northeast, Spreewitz in the east, Burgneudorf in the southeast, the Spreetaler See in the south and Sabrodt and Terpe in the northwest.

history

Spreetal was built between 1915 and 1918 as a workers' settlement for the nearby open- cast lignite mine Hope III , whose coal was converted into electricity in the Trattendorf power station . The settlement bore the name of the pit, which was changed to Brigitta and later to Spreetal . In 1934 the settlement had grown so much that a wooden church was built for both denominations.

Several pump attendants died when they slipped and two memorial stones commemorate them.

After German reunification, the Saxon-Brandenburg state border ran through Spreetal and also ran through some residential buildings. After a public survey in which the residents spoke out against a further division, an exchange of territory between the two countries took place in January 1999.

Personalities

The “singing excavator driver” Gerhard Gundermann (1955–1998) lived in Spreetal until his early death.
