Brightwater is a small town in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place name goes back to Alfred Saunders , who, according to legend, was the first settler in the area to take the clear waters of the Wairoa River as an inspiration for the name of the place after 1855 . According to another legend, the name comes from a popular song " Bright Water " at the time, which propagated that non-alcoholic beverages should be preferred to alcohol.
geography
The place is located about 20 km southwest of Nelson on the banks of the Wairoa River . The New Zealand State Highway 6 , which connects Brightwater with Wakefield in the southwest and Nelson in the northeast , runs through the village .
history
The area around Brightwater was settled by Europeans as early as 1843, which had its origin in Spring Grove when the settler Alfred Saunders built a flax mill .
population
For the 2013 census, Brightwater had 1,749 residents, 2.5% fewer than seven years earlier.
economy
The most important economic sectors in the place are farming, dairy farming, viticulture, fruit growing and wood processing. There are several wineries around the place. There is also a blacksmith and pottery shop in Brightwater .
sport and freetime
Brightwater's main recreational area is the Brightwater Domain with a town hall, skate park , children's playground, tennis courts and several playing fields for ball games. The main sports team is the Goldpine Wanderers rugby team, sponsored by the local woodworking company Goldpine.
education
Brightwater has one elementary school, the Brightwater School . Founded in 1888, the school had 278 first to sixth grade students in 2010.
Personalities
- Ernest Rutherford (1871–1937), Brightwater is the birthplace of the atomic physicist and Nobel Prize winner. A memorial was erected to him in the place.
