St-Andiol (Saint-Andiol)
The Catholic Church Saint-Andiol in Saint-Andiol , a French parish in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region , was opened in the 12./13. Century erected. The church has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1908 .
history
The church, consecrated to St. Andeolus , was built in the 12th century by the Benedictines of the Saint-Victor monastery in Marseille in a swampy area that was reclaimed by the monks. The nave with a barrel vault and the semicircular apse are still preserved from the original church . When the Grandes Compagnies , wandering mercenary troops, made the area unsafe in the 14th century , the church was surrounded by a fortress wall with machicolations and battlements . This explains the similarity of the Church to theNotre-Dame-de-la-Mer church in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer . In the 16th century, a sacristy was added to the southeast corner .
