history

The church of Pontpoint, consecrated to St. Gervasius , was built in the 11th century and redesigned several times over the years. At the end of the 12th century the central nave was renewed and in the 14th century the two eastern bays of the south aisle were vaulted. At the same time a side chapel was added. Another chapel was built on the north aisle in the 16th century.

architecture

Exterior construction

The west facade was changed by a modern vestibule. The pointed arch portal was probably built at the end of the 12th century. It has a triple tiered archivolt with a star band and decorated round bars that rest on six services . Three arcades decorated with foliage divide the tympanum .

The north side has arched windows and a cornice above . The portal on this side dates from the first half of the 12th century and is surrounded by two rows of zigzag bands. The late Gothic chapel is followed by the pentagonal apse , which is reinforced with massive buttresses . The wall is provided with a cornice on corbels below the roof .

The mighty bell tower on the south side of the chancel has three floors with double or triple arched windows. A stone pyramid covers the tower and there are buttresses at the corners.

inner space

The central nave, which is not vaulted, is separated from the side aisles by five arcades. Above the pillars and not in the axis of the arches are the windows of the cliffs . The arcades rest on pillars that have capitals decorated with leaves. The cross-shaped cover plates adapt to the double arch of the arcades.

In the middle of the 12th century, the choir bay, which lies between the nave and the apse, was renewed to create a kind of crossing . The ribbed vault rests on corner pillars that are profiled with round bars. The renewed polygonal apse also dates from the same period . It is also vaulted with a ribbed vault.
