The Catholic Church Saint-Jacques in Illiers-Combray , a commune in the Eure-et-Loir in the French region of Center-Val de Loire , was on the site of the 15th century Romanesque built earlier building. The church has a painted wooden beam ceiling from the 16th century. In 1907, the church was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique . Famous the church tower, which was in Proust in the research plays a prominent role.

history

After the Romanesque predecessor church from the 11th century was devastated during the Hundred Years' War , a new church was built in the 15th century. In 1453 the choir , which was attached to the Romanesque nave , was completed. In 1497 the construction work on the bell tower was completed and the nave yoke up to the west facade was completed. In 1685 the Gothic altars were replaced and the walls were covered with wood paneling. Between 1909 and 1911 the houses that were attached to the church in the north and west were demolished and the free space in front of the church was created.

Exterior construction

The Romanesque portal and two niches on the north side of the previous church from the 11th century have been preserved. The Gothic west portal was probably redesigned after the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century and in the course of the restoration in 1895.

inner space

The single-nave nave merges into the choir that has just closed in the east. The entire interior is spanned by a painted wooden beam ceiling from the 16th century. In addition to floral and ornamental motifs, the apostles are depicted under painted canopies in the flamboyant style.

Furnishing

  • The wood paneling of the walls dates from 1685.
