Parish Church of Cormeilles-en-Vexin

The Saint-Martin Church is a Romanesque parish church in the commune of Cormeilles-en-Vexin in the Val-d'Oise department in the Île-de-France region ( France ). It is ten kilometers northwest of Pontoise . The church has been a listed building ( Monument historique ) since 1911 .

history

The Church of Cormeilles-en-Vexin, the holy Martin consecrated , was started at the beginning of the 12th century. The nave and the transept are from this period. Long nave and side aisles were given a ribbed vault in the 13th century and shortly afterwards the chancel with a flat choir was rebuilt. The outer walls of the aisles were renewed in the 18th century.

architecture

The Romanesque architecture of the church is hardly visible from the outside, because the choir head is high Gothic and was built in the 13th century. The renaissance bell tower that rests over the crossing still has its Romanesque substructure. The central nave and the side aisles are combined under one roof.

The portal on the west side has a modern vestibule. The simple Romanesque portal with a round arched archivolt and an unadorned tympanum is crowned by a gable.

The church of Cormeilles is of art historical importance because of its carved capitals in the nave. These are carved with a series of smooth sheets or palmetto or with a tooth fries provided in the form of a neck brace. The tall and massive cover plates are adorned with scale ornaments, foliage or geometric motifs.
