Apse of Saint-Martin

The Catholic Church Saint-Martin in Valaurie , a French commune in the Drôme department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes , was built in the 12th century. The church has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1926 .

history

The St. Martin consecrated church probably dates back to the 5th or 6th century. The current building, however, dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and in the Middle Ages belonged to the chapter of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux ; it was rebuilt in the 15th century.

architecture

Saint-Martin has only one nave with three yokes and a choir , the inside half-round and outside pentagonal is. The special feature of this church is the entrance hall tower in front of the west facade, a solution that is rare in Provence . The vault of the church was renewed in 1673. Apart from the apse structured by pilaster strips , the exterior and interior of the church, which was kept rather unadorned, was recognized as a monument historique in 1926 .
