Parish Church of Saint-Pierre

The Catholic parish church of Saint-Pierre (also Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul) in Fouesnant , a parish in the Finistère department in the French region of Brittany , was built at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century. It is one of the best preserved Romanesque churches in Finistère. In 1930 the church was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a monument historique .

The church is built on the plan of a Latin cross . The nave and aisles are the oldest parts of the church. It has a three-aisled nave divided into five bays , a slightly pronounced transept and a polygonal closed choir , adjoining two apses . The entire interior is covered with wooden ceilings. High arched arcades separate the main nave from the two narrow aisles. The arcades rest on columns and half-columns that are still decorated with Romanesque capitals .

A multi- profiled pointed arch opens the nave to the crossing , which rests on mighty cantoned pillars . The walls of the transept arms are decorated with blind arcades, which were originally pierced by windows. The arcade arches have multiple profiles, the central columns are partially carved with figurative capitals.

The original choir was probably closed in a semicircle. It was destroyed when the crossing tower collapsed as a result of a storm and was rebuilt in 1754. The west facade, the bell tower, the windows of the aisles and the south porch, for which a door from the 15th century was reused, also date from this period.

Capitals

The capitals of the church deserve special attention. They are designed in a variety of ways and have geometric motifs, plant decorations or figural scenes.

War memorial

War memorial

On the south side of the church there is a war memorial made by René Quillivic in 1921. For once, it does not show a soldier, but a mother in peasant costume, who mourns for her sons who died in the war.
