St. Anthony Cathedral
The St. Anthony's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church in Breda . It was built in 1837 in the classical style. From 1853 to 1876 and again since 2001 it has been the cathedral of the diocese of Breda .
history
St. Antonius, a so-called Waterstaatskirche , was built in 1837 as a Catholic parish church in the center of Breda. In 1853, with the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in the Netherlands and the establishment of the diocese of Breda, St. Antonius became its episcopal church. In 1876 this title passed to the newly built St. Barbara Church, which was demolished in 1970. Since 1968 St. Michael's Church in the Brabantpark has been a cathedral; it was also abandoned and demolished in 2007. Since 2001 the cathedra of the Bishop of Breda has been in St. Anthony again.
architecture
The architect Piet Huysers designed St. Antonius as a stylishly classicist three-aisled hall church . The central nave has a barrel vault , the two aisles are flat-roofed and separated from the central nave by two rows of Corinthian columns - a total of twelve. The two-storey portal facade is designed with columns, pilasters , ornamented architraves and triangular gables based on the model of ancient temples. Above it stands the bell tower with an octagonal lantern .
Furnishing
The originally very economical furnishing, which relied entirely on the spatial effect, was enriched in the course of the 19th century by some valuable elements, including the carved wood pulpit with scenes from the life of the patron saint Antonius of Padua and the gold and silver tabernacle altar in the end of the choir .
organ
The organ was built by the organ builder Loret and redesigned in 1910 by the organ builder Maarschalkerweerd, among other things equipped with pneumatic action . Today the instrument has 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
