St. Bavo's Cathedral (Haarlem)
The St. Bavo Cathedral ( Dutch Cathedral basiliek Sint Bavo ) is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam . The church building was built from 1895 to 1930 as the successor to the St. Joseph State Church. When the diocese was re-established in 1855, this church was the new bishopric instead of the St. Bavo Church , which has belonged to the Protestant Church since 1578 due to the Reformation .
1948 received the church from Pope Pius XII. the title of a minor basilica .
Inside the cathedral, the former sacristy has been converted into a small museum ( schatkamer ) and shows historical art treasures from Haarlem's Catholic history.
Building history
From 1853 the church of St. Joseph served as a cathedral, but it was too small for this task despite enlargements. Bishop Bottemanne began planning the construction of a new cathedral in 1893, which would also serve as a parish church. Originally, Pierre Cuypers was supposed to design the church, but due to its age, his son, Joseph Cuypers , was commissioned. Cuypers initially designed a neo-Gothic style church, apparently still under the influence of his father, but eventually, after numerous changes, Cuypers opted for the Neo-Romanesque style with influences from Byzantine and Art Nouveau . Construction began in 1895 with the construction of the choir and its chapel wreath . The cathedral was consecrated on April 1, 1898. The construction continued from 1902 to 1906. Due to lack of money, the construction of the towers was delayed until 1927. During this period Cuypers was supported by his son Pierre Cuypers Jr. In 1976 the cathedral was declared a Rijksmonument .
organ
The large organ of the cathedral, the Willibrord organ , was built between 1921 and 1923 by the Adema company for the St. Willibrord Church in Amsterdam and was moved to Haarlem in 1971. The organ has 80 stops on four manuals and a pedal . There is also an Adema organ from 1907 and a cabinet organ from around 1800 is in use for the choir .
