Caspar Josephus Martinus Bottemanne , also Kaspar Josef Martin Bottemanne (born August 14, 1823 in Alkmaar , † May 22, 1903 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch cleric and Roman Catholic bishop of Haarlem .

Life

Bottemanne was the son of Johannes Josephus Bottemanne (* around 1796 in Rotterdam) and of Clara Susanna Straatman (baptized on October 8, 1791 in Alkmaar). He completed the small seminar "College Hageveld" in Heemstede and then studied Catholic theology in Warmond, today a district of Teylingen . In 1846 he was ordained a priest. After pastoral work as a chaplain in Zoeterwoude and as a "deservitor" (pastor ad interim) on the island of Texel , he was appointed professor of moral theology at the seminary ("Groot Seminaire") in Warmond in 1853 , where he also taught church history. He published numerous articles, especially on church history in the Netherlands in the Middle Ages and on papal history. In 1876 Bottemanne was appointed rector of the seminary in Warmond.

On August 10, 1883, Pope Leo XIII appointed Caspar Josephus Martinus Bottemanne as Bishop of Haarlem. The Archbishop of Utrecht , Petrus Matthias Snickers , donated him episcopal ordination on September 30th of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Breda , Henricus van Beek , and the Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch , Adrianus Godschalk .

He initiated the construction of the new St. Bavo Cathedral .
